Xunantunich Mayan Ruins Tour from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Explore the Maiden of the Rock

Xunantunich meaning “maiden of the rock” or “stone woman” in Maya, is situated on the Western Highway across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz.

Xunantunich is a Classic Period ceremonial center. The site core occupies only 300 square meters but the periphery covers several square kilometers. In Group A, Structure A-6 (El Castillo) rises 130 feet above plaza level making it one of the tallest buildings in Belize. On this structure there are two temples.  The lower temple is famous for its large stucco frieze. A mask with larger ears probably represents the sun god. Next to this mask, there is a moon sign with a border of signs representing Venus.

  1. Nikki

We did Lamanai Ruins on our last trip so we decided to visit Xunantuich Ruins instead. We got to climb the temples and saw Guatemala from over 130 feet high.
Our guide was exceptional and Rupert made the day one to remember. He thought us everything we needed to know about the ruins and the Mayas who occupied the area. It was surely a fun and educational tour. High highly recommend him and his company. You can also add cave tubing after. We didn’t because we did that last time we were in Belize but that’s a fun activity as well.

  2. Amy C

Incredible tour. Combine with Cave Rafting for more fun. We did it while we stayed in San Ignacio along with tubing before we went out the the Cayes. Very beautiful site.
